Binary
DEBUT ABLUM NOW AVAILABLE EVERYWHERE
The album showcases the duo’s synergetic and versatile sound, a blend of carefully curated East and West Coast flavors that effortlessly combines Vonn’s acoustic and pop feel with Thomas’s jazz, R&B and rock background. The result is an instantly familiar and addictive sound that hearkens back to the singer-songwriter rock movement of the early 2000s and gives a new meaning to the comfort music of today.
From money and family to love, passion and heartbreak, Binary is a collection of ten songs that highlight DVNCT’s knack for pop-rock with a range, journeying through life’s emotions, questions and experiences. “High and Mighty” explores the obsession of money and material things, while “Magic Stuff” evokes the feeling of being in love through the purity of acoustic guitar and earnest vocals. “Ladies and Gentleman,” meanwhile, showcases a darker side of DVNCT, exploring themes of accusation, guilt and wrongful prosecution, with a looming, ominous and curiously captivating sound filled with organs and down-tempo riffs.
Vonn and Thomas began writing Binary in Los Angeles but finished most of the album virtually during the pandemic, taking advantage of Zoom and cloud capabilities, sending ideas, edits and notes to each other from across the country. “It’s actually pretty easy to have a ‘long distance’ musical relationship these days,” says Vonn.
The album cover of Binary features art by New York artist Gregg Emery, in a work that is also titled “Binary.” “We were looking at collaborating with Gregg on the album cover and scrolling through some of his pieces. This one stood out,” says Thomas. “We found out it was called ‘Binary.’ It fit well because Damon and I have two different musical backgrounds. This project feels like it brings out the best in both of us.
